Recently in class, we had a class project. For this project we wrote and sent a letter to the president of Ireland (Michael D Higgins). Each pupil in the class wrote a letter; also each pupil included a poem or a picture. We bound them all into one big book. We hope we get a reply from him. We invited him to come to our school and open our new hall extension which will hopefully be finished by the end of the school year. St. Brigids Day is celebrated on the 1st February . There are many stories associated wit St. Brigid but the most popular story is called ” The Magic Cloak ” . It is about Brigid wanting land to build a church . Brigid asked him for as much land as her cloak could cover . The chief laughed and said she could have that much land . Brigid threw her cloak onto the ground and it somehow grew bigger and bigger . Eventually the cloak stopped growing , but by then it was miles long . there are many facts about St. Brigid . One of the big facts is that the dandelion is sometimes called Brigid’s flower probably due to the fact that it is one of the first wild flowers to come into bloom . Brigid is the patron saint of cattle , and dairy work , poets , blacksmiths , healers , Irish nuns , midwives and new -born babies . To see a hedgehog on St. Brigid’s day was a good  weather sign, for the hedgehog to comes out of the hole in whitch he spends the winter, looks about to judge the weather and returns to his burrow if bad weather is going to continue. if he stayed out ,it indictated that mild weather is coming.
Legend has it that St. Brigid came to the site of the monastery in clondalkin and baptised pagans at the well on boot road. The sturcture dates from around 1761.The well is believed to have curative powers.A piece of rag dipped in the water and used to wipe the face, was said to cure eye complaints . After use the rag would be hung on the adjoining tree .
Another fact about the feast of St. Brigid is placing a silk ribbon on the window sill outside on the eve of St. Brigid. The ribbon was said to lenghthen during the night. And was kept as a remedy for headache .this was known as ” Ribbon Bride ” .

In class today we made our own St. Brigid.s cross out of paper straws.

Our class have recently been reading a box set of Michael Morpurgo’s novels . The last book we have read has been War Horse . Here is a little review we put together . This book is mainly about a horse’s experience as a war horse . He starts off with his mother but is then sold in the local horse fair , the man who buys him is drunk at the time but his son Albert takes good care of him and names him Joey . Albert’s father needs the money for a heavey to plough so sells him to the army . Joey learns to become a war horse by his new friend Topthorn . When him and Topthorn are taken away , their new job is to pull the ambulance cart . When the war cools down Topthorn and Joey get to go and live with a girl and her grandad . After a year the army comes back and takes them away . Thats all we’re going to tell you , but we would definitely recommend the book and film for you .
