Hi, I’m Ryan Cullen from Ms Duggan’s Fifth Class. For around a month, we have been learning about the Great Famine and reading the novel ”Under The Hawthorn Tree”. We have been typing, learning and researching about the Great Famine
and everyonegot great work done! Our Famine project included interesting facts about the Great Famine. Each group in 5A has a booklet with the groups work in it.

”Under The Hawthorn Tree” was a great book! We answered quiz questions and we did worksheets for our display. ”Under The Hawthorn Tree” is about three childen who must find their great-aunts when their parents dissappear. Along the way, there are lots of obstacles. In my opinion, ”Under The Hawthorn Tree” is a great book! We hope you like our Famine display!!!

Making Butter

Last week our class made butter in Science class. We really enjoyed the lesson and it was super fantastic.

This is how we made it.

Materials needed:

1.Heavy cream at room temperature.

2.A jar with a lid.

Instructions:

1.Put some heavy cream into a jar with a lid.

2.Screw the lid on tight and begin to shake it.

3.The cream has little globs of fat and protein. When you shake the jar, you get the fat and

the protein that are moving around in the cream to stick together.

4.Keep shaking the cream back and forth until it thickens. In about 10 minutes, it will turn to butter.

5.When you shake the jar, the little fat and protein globs in the cream hit each other and stick together, forming a larger and larger glob.

6.The glob is butter! The liquid that’s leftover is buttermilk.

The most interesting thing we learned in this lesson was how whipped cream suddenly looked like scrambled egg.

We didn’t like when the lesson was over because it was fun.

The lesson could have been better if we didn’t have to shake the jar so much, but that is the only thing we didn’t like because our arms got sore.

By Adam Nugent and Cían Kelly.

First they looked at and talked about dragons with respect to size, shape, colour and pattern. Then they constructed their own dragons using collage and created the flame effect using the action painting technique called blow painting.

St. Brigids Day is celebrated on the 1st February . There are many stories associated wit St. Brigid but the most popular story is called ” The Magic Cloak ” . It is about Brigid wanting land to build a church . Brigid asked him for as much land as her cloak could cover . The chief laughed and said she could have that much land . Brigid threw her cloak onto the ground and it somehow grew bigger and bigger . Eventually the cloak stopped growing , but by then it was miles long . there are many facts about St. Brigid . One of the big facts is that the dandelion is sometimes called Brigid’s flower probably due to the fact that it is one of the first wild flowers to come into bloom . Brigid is the patron saint of cattle , and dairy work , poets , blacksmiths , healers , Irish nuns , midwives and new -born babies . To see a hedgehog on St. Brigid’s day was a good weather sign, for the hedgehog to comes out of the hole in whitch he spends the winter, looks about to judge the weather and returns to his burrow if bad weather is going to continue. if he stayed out ,it indictated that mild weather is coming.

Legend has it that St. Brigid came to the site of the monastery in clondalkin and baptised pagans at the well on boot road. The sturcture dates from around 1761.The well is believed to have curative powers.A piece of rag dipped in the water and used to wipe the face, was said to cure eye complaints . After use the rag would be hung on the adjoining tree .

Another fact about the feast of St. Brigid is placing a silk ribbon on the window sill outside on the eve of St. Brigid. The ribbon was said to lenghthen during the night. And was kept as a remedy for headache .this was known as ” Ribbon Bride ” .

In class today we made our own St. Brigid.s cross out of paper straws.

It takes Mars 687 days to orbit the sun. On a clear night you can see Mars. Mars is called the red planet because of oxidisation or in other words it is rusty. Mars is cold and dusty. Mars seemed to have had rivers and seas billions of years ago and may have supported life but now it is cold and dry with no signs of life. Mars has little atmosphere. Mars is 228 million kilometres from the sun. The biggest volcano on Mars is called Olympus Mons and is 26 km high, which is three times bigger than Mount Everest. Mars has two moons called Phobos and Deimos.
